10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Celebrate Spring, K9 Run, Bicycle Rodeo, and Car Show

Each week we will be bringing you 10 fun things to do in Northwest Indiana over the weekend, so you are never without something to do!

Spring Out to Sunset Perfect for the Whole Family
Spring Out to Sunset comes to Sunset Hill Farm County Park this weekend! The date marks National Kids to Parks Day, adding to the incentive for families to get outside and get active. As is the case every year, families are also encouraged to bring their leashed dogs, and can fly kites at the park throughout the day. The 180GO! Stunt Kite Team has been a favorite at Spring Out to Sunset for the past several years and will be back this year. Their aerial maneuvers always draw a crowd and they will be performing and offering demonstrations throughout the day. A talented team of Frisbee dogs that has appeared before crowds during NBA and NFL halftime shows is set to perform, and their trainers will work with anyone who wants to receive tips for training their own dogs.

Valpo Police K9 Unit 5K Run, 1 Mile Walk
On May 19, 2012, the Valparaiso Police will host a 5K run and 1 mile dog walk at Central Park Plaza. The race, held rain or shine, will start at 9 am, followed by the walk at 9:15 am. The course is a road course, with moderate hills. The event will take place from 9 am to 3 pm. Following the race, there will be entertainment, food, and demonstrations. All proceeds will be donated for the purchase of a new K9 and K9 Unit expenses.

Armed Forces Day Event on PHS Football Field Set for Friday
On Friday night, May 18, the United States Marine Corps Reserve will pay a visit to Portage High School. The marines will lead the Portage varsity football team through a Combat Fitness Test on the PHS football field. All veterans will be admitted free of charge and honored during the event. Military leaders from the area have donated to help make the event possible.

Portage Fire Department to Host Bicycle Rodeo Day
The Portage Fire Department is hosting a Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, May 19, 2012, from 9 am to noon. With help from Porter Hospital and IAFF Local 3151, the department will have a bicycle obstacle course set up for children to maneuver through. The Portage Kiwanis Club will also be on hand, helping fit children with helmets while supplies last.

PHS Auto Tech to Host Car Show
Join car enthusiasts for a CAR SHOW AND SHINE on Saturday, May 19th, 2012 from 10 am until 3 pm. All makes and models are welcome. Students will select “Best in Show”. Come and see what the students are doing and support our community in a fun-filled way. Food and beverages available on-site.

Zumbathon to Benefit OE
This Saturday, come out to Southlake Fitness for 2 hours of Zumba fun, with all proceeds going to OE! After the Zumbathon, El Salto is catering the after-party, with free appetizers and pitchers of margaritas for all participants.

Local Fire and Police Departments to Compete in 5th Annual "Battle of the Badges"
Eight local police and fire departments will put their skills on the basketball court to the test in the 5th Annual “Battle of the Badges” tournament. The tournament will take place at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County-South Haven Club . “Battle of the Badges” is open to the public. Come and cheer on your local public safety teams.

Relay for Life of Greater Valparaiso
Remember those we have lost and fight back against cancer with the 2012 Relay for Life on May 18-19, 5 pm to 8 pm. This event will once again be held at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Relay for Life is an overnight event where teams camp out around a track and take turns walking throughout the night. Hundreds of community members come together to celebrate our cancer survivors.

4th Annual Motorcycle Ride for Breast Cancer
Come out on Sunday, May 20, 2012, to the Harley Davidson in Valparaiso for a motorcycle ride in memory of Bonnie Bartz. Registration begins at 9:30 am, with the bikes leaving at 11:00 am. The run ends at American Legion Post 261 in Cedar Lake. There will be prizes, including a 1st place prize of $75, 2nd place $50, and 3rd, $25. There will also be door prizes, raffles, and an auction.

School Town of Munster Presents First International Festival
The School Town of Munster will be hosting its first annual Munster International Festival. This event will be held at Munster High School in the Fieldhouse and Auditorium. There will be activities, photo opportunities, performances, passport booths, food and beverages available at the event.
