10 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Northwest Indiana: Polar Plunge, Dance Parties, Film Screening and Concerts

Second Polar Plunge to Benefit Special Olympics
The second Polar Plunge at Valparaiso University to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Indiana will take place at noon Saturday, Feb. 18. As Special Olympics Indiana’s signature fundraising event, the Polar Plunge invites participants to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” by raising funds and awareness for adults and children with intellectual disabilities. Polar Plunge participants will brave the icy cold water at one of 11 sites — including the Valpo campus — throughout the state during the month of February for Special Olympics Indiana. Last year, the Polar Plunge season raised more than $370,000 for Special Olympics Indiana.

Sevenglory in Concert at Calvary Church
National recording artists Sevenglory will appear at Calvary Church on Friday, February 17 at 7 p.m. for a high-energy evening of music benefitting Mitaboni Children’s Home in Kenya, Africa. Joining Sevenglory are special guest artists Daniel Doss and Jennie Wellsand. The church has accepted responsibility for fully supporting the Mitaboni Children’s Home, an orphanage run by Kids Alive, and contributing to the wellbeing of the local community of Mitaboni, Kenya.

Rug Hookers Exhibit at the Chesterton Art Center
The Chesterton Art Center is exhibiting the works of the Northwest Indiana Rug Hookers during the month of February. Members of the group include area residents Barbara Coulter, Sandi Church, Kathy Bryant, Jill Hicks, Marian Sykes, Judy Lanoue, and Deanna Bergslein. This group does primitive rug hooking, using wool fabric which is cut into strips and then hooked into a backing material. The artist designs on the backing material and the fabric strips are hooked in by color to form the design. The members of the group plan to give a demonstration of their art on Saturday, February 18 from 2-4 pm at the Chesterton Art Center.

Free Workshop on Being a Butterfly Monitor
Great opportunities are available for those interested in becoming “butterfly monitors” to help collect information on butterflies that can be found in northwest Indiana. The Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network (IBMN) is a citizen scientist program monitoring the health of butterfly populations throughout northeastern and central Illinois. The IBMN is offering a free workshop through the Valpo Parks on being a butterfly monitor.

PNC, Library to Host "Margin Call" Film Screenings
Public showings of the film "Margin Call" will be offered through a collaboration of the Purdue University North Central Odyssey 2011- 2012 Arts and Cultural Events Series and the Michigan City Public Library. The showings are free and open to the public. It will be shown Sunday, Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. Fourth St., Michigan City and Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. in the PNC Library-Student-Faculty Building Assembly Hall, Room 02.

Youth Explosion at Victory Christian Center
Victory Christian Center is hosting a Youth Explosion on February 18, 2012, at 6 pm. Come meet BLAST, former half of the World Tag Team Champions "The New Demolition". Blast will be sharing his testimony and ministering to a generation of young adults that are hungry for change!

Join the Dance Party at the YMCA
nce while getting exercise and having fun all at once. Two new dances will be focused on each class. The party will include 10 minute review of previous class followed by 40 minutes group lesson on new dances and conclude with freestyle to practice what you learned. February 17 will feature Waltz and Bolero.

Free Concert to Benefit Homeless in Valparaiso
A FREE concert with an optional donation to benefit OPEN ARMS, a support network for homeless women in Valparaiso, will be presented by a local band named "Shades of Gray" on February 19th from 3--5 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Carol's Voice 2nd Annual Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser
The Valparaiso VFW Post 988 is sponsoring the second annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser for Carol's Voice, a non-profit organization that is educating and bringing public awareness to cardiac syncope. Cardiac syncope, a serious and often fatal symptom of heart disease, is rarely heard of or talked about. February is HEART HEALTH MONTH so please join us in this educational, fun filled event with door prizes, raffle drawings, "heart races", and much more!
