PNC Disc Golf Course Opening Ceremony and Tournament
Purdue University North Central will debut its first 18-hole disc golf course at the PNC Student Convocation and Welcome Ceremony on Aug. 20, at 1 p.m. This year's Student Convocation and Welcome Ceremony will feature a ribbon cutting for the course and a Support the Cause Tournament for the Van for Steven fund with a $10 entry fee.
Taste of Downtown to Celebrate a Variety of Local Cuisine!
Central Park Plaza will come alive with plenty of activities for the entire family to enjoy including a kids inflatable area. Enjoy the beer garden and local cuisine throughout the day from downtown restaurants including Bistro 157, Bon Femme Café, Don Quijote, Margaritas and Pikk’s Tavern.
Portage Exchange Club Raffle and VFW Picnic
The Portage Exchange Club's annual Charity Raffle for Kids is in high gear. Win $10,000 or a brand new Ford Focus with twelve other cash prizes possible. Proceeds will go to the Needy Kids Christmas Shopping Event and other local charities that benefit children.
Lakefront Art Festival Celebrates Its 30th Year
Always the third weekend in August, this year’s Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21, 2011. The popular children’s art tent will once again entertain “emerging artists” while the international food court will offer sustenance to hungry shoppers. Admission is $4, with proceeds benefiting Lubeznik Center for the Arts.
VHS Football Home Opener vs Penn Radio Broadcast Live on ValpoLife
The 2011 Valparaiso High School football season kicks off on Friday, August 19, 2011 with the Vikings playing host to rival Penn Kingsmen in a matchup of two of the state’s top teams. The game will be broadcast live on ValpoLife thanks to the Region Sports Network’s radio team, with the broadcast starting at 6:00pm CST.

Baptist Children's Home in Valparaiso will host its 31st Annual Bike-a-thon on Saturday, August 20, 2011. Ride 20 miles or walk 2 miles on the beautiful Prairie Duneland Trail.
Valparaiso F.O.P. Lodge 76 Nelson Chicken Fundraiser
The Valparaiso Fraternal Order Police Lodge 76 is currently conducting their annual Nelson Chicken Fundraiser. Many of the funds collected are given back to community members in need through various yearly programs. The chicken and ribs will be sold on Friday, August 19th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the K-mart parking lot.
Dames at Sea Continues for Its Second Weekend
New York salutes Hollywood in this affectionate spoof of the Busby Berkeley-Harry Warren an Al Dubin-Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler-style film musical of the 30s. The setting is the deck of a battleship where Ruby, the talented tap-dancer from the sticks climbs aboard a youngster and disembarks a star! The show is being floated because its songwriter, Dick happens to be a sailor and is able, therefore, to offer an alternative venue when under pressure from leading lady Mona. Unfortunately life on the ocean wave doesn't quite agree with Mona so Ruby takes over and she and Dick set off on a long voyage together.

Medical Benefit Fundraiser In Memory of Jesus Villanueva
On Saturday, August 20, 2011, from 1 pm to 8 pm, join others at the Eagles Lodge in Valparaiso to help raise funds in memory of Jesus Villanueva. The event will feature a dinner, 50/50 raffle, bake sale, and silent auction, with all proceeds going to the Villanueva family.
