Last night 18 community members graduated from the department Citizens’ Police Academy. Participants of the academy completed an eight week course, meeting once a week for three hours.
Participants of the class received hands on information regarding many different divisions and topics about the department. Members of the class conducted mock traffic stops, participated in an officer ride along, learned about the hiring process, learned of the K9 program, used a shoot/no shoot firearms simulator and participated in evidence collection. Three individuals in the class volunteered to be tased during a taser demonstration.
Yearly the department hosts the Citizens Police Academy. Approximately 200 community members have now graduated from the course since 2005. For more information about the course, log onto the department website at www.valparaisopolice.org.
