1st Grader Receives Community Service Award from Police Chief

Today, May 13, 2009, Chief of Police Michael Brickner and numerous other officers visited Bailey Elementary School in Chesterton to present a Community Service Award to a first grader.

On April 21st of this year, Rosie Portelli was home alone with her mother when she learned her mother needed immediate medical treatment. Rosie’s mother had passed out and Rosie, who has a hearing impairment, dialed 911 to get help for her mother. Valparaiso Police Officers were dispatched to the scene and were uncertain of the problem due to the communication difficulties. When officers arrived Rosie had secured the family’s K-9 and opened the door allowing entry into the house for the officers. EMS personal arrived a short time later and determined Rosie’s mother was in need of immediate medical treatment due to a diabetic issue.  She has since recovered.

During a presentation, in the school gym, in front of all her classmates, Rosie Portelli received a Community Service Award. Chief Brickner stated, “because of Rosie’s courage and actions, which possibly saved her mother’s life the Valparaiso Police Department would like to present this Community Service Award”.  “She is a great example for other students”.
