#1StudentNWI: Enjoying the Free Time Until the New Year at Washington Township High School

Two Weeks of Winter Fun
At the end of December, starting on the 19th, staff and students will be on break for two weeks. It is a time for everyone to be with family for the holidays. Many students have fun plans however others prefer to use this time to catch up on sleep. Senior Brooke Regalado has been busier rather than lazy this break.

She says, “I have been shopping, Christmas shopping, went to the movies, went to four Christmas parties, worked a few days, and went laser tagging”.

And all of this happened in only one week. Brooke is definitely busy and probably has no time for sleep.

Even though it is more fun being busy there is nothing wrong with being lazy these two weeks, I mean that’s what it is there for, right? It is good to have fun but some days are meant to be spent in your pajamas sipping hot chocolate, even though there is still no sign of snow.

Once students go back to school they will cycle back into their same old schedule which includes no sleep. Their next break will be spring break which seems like a long time but will be here before we know it.

New Year New Me
During the two-week holiday break, staff and students will be celebrating the start of a new year. Which means everyone will have some type of new year’s resolution.

Jackie Lukes is a freshman at WT and is very excited for 2016. She already knows some of her new year’s resolutions.

Jackie says,”I am striving to get straight A’s in 2016. I also want to work very hard in softball and volleyball”.

There are many things for Jackie to look forward to in 2016 as well. One of those is softball in the spring. She is also looking forward to the new iPhone that will most likely be put out this year.

Many achievements were made this year around the world in 2015. Jackie predicts that a computerized volleyball will be invented in 2016. This ball will have a chip in the center to calculate whether the ball was in or out. It will also help players improve their serving, hitting, and setting averages.

Jackie is looking forward to becoming a sophomore and says that when the new year comes, the summer will be right around the corner.

Senior Athlete: Donnae Lipinski
This year is Donnae Lipinski’s senior year, which means her last year of playing her favorite sport in high school. That sport is basketball. She started playing in seventh grade and wants to continue playing in college.

Donnae says, “The sport requires a lot of hard work from all of the players to be successful. The time, the effort, and the pain put in really bring the whole team together is one of the reasons I love it”.

At WT Donnae plays any position necessary, very much expected given her outstanding athletic ability, which is a plus in any sport. However, she hopes in college she will play a small forward or a power forward.

With basketball being her favorite sport and a huge part of her life, it will be hard for her after this season. Even though she will be playing in college, wherever that may be, she will really miss her basketball family at WT.

The Unique Life of Grace Lacy
Second-year Spanish teacher at WT, Grace Lacy is a unique character who really enjoys her job at WT. Miss Lacy has been teaching for nine years at Michigan City, the Peace Corps, Purdue North Central, and WT.

She says, “The part I enjoy most about my job is encouraging students to use their imagination and be creative with the Spanish language”. Miss Lacy believes that knowledge is one of the greatest gifts that you can pass along to a person. She chose to teach Spanish because it is one of the top world languages and is spoken in 21 countries. Speaking of countries, Miss Lacy hasn’t only been in America. She has been all around the world.

“My first few trips were to Germany, Australia, and Switzerland because I studied German in high school. In college, I traveled to Costa Rica, Peru, and Mexico. My most recent trip was to Ecuador, where I served two years in the Peace Corps. Coming up in 2016 I will be going to Puerto Rico with my students from WT and Morgan Township”, says Miss Lacy.

If she wasn’t a teacher Miss Lacy says, “I would enjoy working in a bakery. I find joy in putting on an apron, getting my hands and face covered in flour and mixing up batches of cookies, loaves of bread, and other scrumptious goodies!”
