#1StudentNWI: Students in the Community at Boone Groove High School

What's happening
This week Boone Grove High School's, Natural helpers, left for their last three-day retreat of the year. To become selected for Natural Helpers, students are elected by their peers. They are asked to write down three names based on one question: Who is someone that has helped you and that you feel comfortable talking to? From this select amount of students, their names are tallied and the students with the most "votes" get their names sent to the staff and board.

There, each name is reviewed and approved. As you can see being selected for Natural Helpers means your name must go though a large process of selection. Therefore, being selected as a Natural Helper at Boone Grove High School is a huge honor. Students go on the retreat their Junior and/or Senior year. The new Natural Helpers are lead by their Rainbow Staff along with two advisors.

A Rainbow Staff member is someone who has already gone on a retreat previous to that of the next. That means that this very select group of students has gone through the selection process a second time! This retreats rainbow staff consists of Nickie Cornett, Tony Skoda, Matt Perez, Sara Martinez, Courtney Casbon, Jordan Lopez, and Samantha Wolf. Congratulations to the 2016 spring retreat Rainbow Staff members!

Boone Grove High Schools tech. department member, Mikey Skoda, created his very own application! Being that Boone Grove has student iPads, teachers wanted a secure way to take online tests. However software for such an action would cost Boone Grove a very large amount of money.

Seeing the problem at hand, Mikey Skoda decided to teach himself how to write code over the weekend! Not only did Mikey teach himself how to write code; he created his own application!! Mikey created an app that allows students to log on with their Schoology ID and every test on Schoology will appear in a list.

From there, students can take any of the following tests securely. Mikey then sold his app to the Apple Play Store allowing all students to be capable of downloading the FREE app! Thank you, Mikey!

Boone Grove's English teacher, Mrs. Jori Swan, is currently teaching three different English classes: an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech, the sponsor for the senior class of 2016, and a full time mother!

Mrs. Swan currently teaches the English 12 AP classes, English 11 AP classes, and English 10. This year at Boone Grove's Homecoming Pep rally, Mrs. Swan even rapped a song in front of the entire student body and faculty!

The class of 2016 would like to thank Mrs. Swan for all the hard work and time she has dedicated to the late nights painting signs during homecoming week, to the hours put into planning the 2015 Junior-Senior Prom.

Boone Grove's senior, Tyler Pierce, qualified for the international DECA (High School/Collegiate Business) Competition. Tyler qualified for this competition through his Strategic Marketing Internship (SMI) class.

Tyler competed in the Apparel and Accessories category; being that he works at Men's Wearhouse. At district, you must take a 100 question exam and go through a role-play. During a role-play you are given a marketing scenario, given ten minutes to prepare, and then ten minutes to present.

Tyler came in first place at the District competition in Munster. At State, you take another 100 question exam and go through two role-plays. Tyler came in third place overall in Apparel and Accessories at the State competition held in Indianapolis.

Tyler received a 98% on one of his role plays and a very good score on his exam.

"I give credit to Men's Wearhouse for my ability to speak to people comfortably and easily," he said.
