2013 Summer Chinese Immersion Program at Valparaiso University

Do you want to have the tool to connect yourself with the fastest growing and second largest economy in the world? Do you want to learn the language in an immersion environment right here in Valparaiso, Indiana? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we have a program for you!!!

From July 8th through July 19th 2013, the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University (CIVU) in collaboration with and Chinese and Japanese Studies Program will host the second Summer Chinese Immersion Program (CJSP) at Valparaiso University. This program will admit up to 30 students from 3rd grade on up to engage in an intensive Chinese language program to help build a foundation of Chinese language and culture. No prior language training is required for entry level Chinese. However, students with 1-2 years of experience of learning will be placed into the intermediate level Chinese class. This year’s immersion program features the attendance of a dozen visiting Chinese college students who will assist in language learning and cultural activities.

Chinese Immersion Program Goals for Participants:

  • Pronounce the initials, finals and tones of the Chinese pinyin system correctly;
  • Build a core Chinese vocabulary and learn to read and write Chinese characters;
  • Learn useful expressions in colloquial Chinese that you can apply in daily life or travel to China;
  • Be able to engage in simple conversations in Chinese with confidence;
  • Build a foundation for further study of Chinese on your own.

 

Two Week Program: Including lectures, group discussions, one-on-one tutoring sessions with native Chinese college students, and various language-based activities.

  • Meets Monday through Friday, July 5th – July 18th 2013
  • Class time runs from 9:00am – 2:00pm, with cultural activities after lunch
  • Cost: $250 (the cost includes instruction, textbooks, lunch, and all required activity fees)
