4-H Project Day Coming to Sunset Hill Farm

4-H-Junior leadersPorter County Parks and Recreation is teaming up with Porter County 4-H to host a Project Day at Sunset Hill Farm County Park this Saturday, Sept. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. It is free and open to the public.

Members of 4-H will display projects that they have worked on during the past year, giving people who are interested in joining the group a chance to see what opportunities are available. Leaders of Porter County 4-H will also attend the event to distribute membership information and answer any questions that people might have.

Porter County 4-H has been a partner with Porter County Parks and Recreation for several years. One of their key duties has been caring for the goats that live at the park. Their hard work paid off at the Porter County Fair this past July, when several members of the Liberty Sunsetters 4-H group showed the Sunset Hill Farm goats and received multiple awards.

The mission of Indiana 4-H is to assist youth and adults in their development by conducting hands-on educational programs using the knowledge base of Purdue University, other land grant universities and the United States Department of Agriculture.

4-H is the largest youth organization in the nation. Members of Porter County 4-H get to work with adults and teen volunteers to learn and build skills in a variety of areas. There are more than 70 projects members can choose from, including animals/livestock, arts and crafts, photography, sewing, veterinary science, gardening and much more.

To be involved in a club-based 4-H program, students must be in grades 3-12. Porter County 4-H also offers special programs for kids in grades K-2.

Project Day will be an opportunity for families to come out and learn about 4-H and all of the great things we have to offer,” 4-H volunteer Ryan Wilson said. “We are looking forward to spreading the word about the organization and giving members the chance to display the projects they have worked so hard on during the past year.
