Coming up on July 10-12, 2015 is the 46th Annual Merrillville Greek Fest. This festival celebrates Greek culture with food, festivities, and fun!
The three-day festival will be at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison Street, Merrillville, IN 46410. There will be live entertainment every day as well as games and rides for kids and grown-ups, and guests will get the chance to try authentic Greek cuisine. Roasted lamb, shish-ka-bobs, Grecian chicken, gyros and the award winning “Greek Potatoes” will be at the ready for all who attend. There is also a beer garden for those 21 and older.
The festival began when the church moved from its original location in Gary, IN. The festival used to be a week long and it was scaled down to three days.
"The festival takes place for two reasons," Fr. Ted Poteres of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral said. "It serves as a fundraiser for the church - when we moved to the new location in Merrillville the festival helped to support the building of the new church, and we hold the festival to celebrate the Hellenic culture through food, music, and dance."
The dancing performances are said to be second to none. Fr. Ted said that the children who perform practice all year long and even travel all over the state to perform.
"This is going to be a fun time for everyone. We look forward to this every year and we're ready to share all that we have to offer to the community," Fr. Ted said.
