A Poem for Wizard of Oz, Breakfast, and Theatre Lovers

A Poem for Wizard of Oz, Breakfast, and Theatre Lovers

Have you ever had breakfast with a scarecrow?
It’s a wonderful time, and you must know,
That lions love to dine in the morning time
With tin men and young ladies in tow.

There is one girl of which I speak.
She had a terribly unlucky streak.
Her poor dog was taken by a mean old crone
And a twister nearly knocked down her family's home.

The girl’s name was Dorothy and to her dismay,
The twister took her someplace far, far away.
She landed in Oz, with a swish her house dropped
Right on top of a witch, with a big old plop.

Munchkin Land rejoiced, “The witch is dead!”
But her sister showed up, and angrily said,
“I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog, too!”
But the good witch Glinda thought that this wouldn’t do.

She sent Dorothy on her way on the yellow brick road
With ruby slippers, well wishes, and her dog, Toto.
To Emerald City they went, and met on their way
A Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion (odd crew, I must say).

A home, heart, brain, and the nerve were needed.
When they asked the wizard for help he said he’d agree if
They’d take out the witch, the Wicked Witch of the West.
She’s a tough one to beat, but they would give their best.

Long story short, the witch was defeated.
And they got what they wanted and the story’s completed.
The group shared their tale with the people of Valpo,
So everyone learned of the great band of heroes.

Where else can you say that you sipped coffee with a lion?
Or ate a muffin with a scarecrow? Or chatted with a Tin Man?
The Memorial Opera House made it happen, one chilly Saturday,
Giving the citizens a peak at their upcoming play.

The Wizard of Oz is coming up soon
To the Opera House’s stage (an excellent venue).
So relive the tale and go see the show
Of a girl who went somewhere over the rainbow.
