A Valpo Life in the Spotlight: Eileen Telesky

A Valpo Life in the Spotlight: Eileen Telesky

If you’re someone who indulges in all-natural scents and products, perhaps take a look at Scented Seasons Soy Candle & Soap Shoppe. Eileen Telesky is the owner of this fine establishment, which specializes in homemade, plant-based candles and soaps.

Moving to Valparaiso from Illinois back in 2005, Telesky’s journey to where she is at today is quite a tale. When her daughter caught a severe case of eczema, she taught herself how to make all-natural, handmade soap that could alleviate the issues, which turned out to be a massive success. A few years later, a chance encounter with the owner of a small Valpo shop named Scented Seasons led to Telesky buying the business and continuing its legacy. The former owner then trained her how to make homemade candles.

“Despite being an introvert, I have made so many new friends since I began this business,” Telesky said. “I’ve established such a great network filled with fantastic individuals around this area.”

Telesky explained that the philosophy behind creating her shop’s all-natural offerings aligns with her vegan lifestyle. She ensures all of her plant-based products are healthy for the body and soul as well as environment-friendly.

Telesky states that one of her recent top sellers, a candle called “Into the Woods,” is one of her favorites. As the name suggests, it is heavily inspired by nature and is created with a variety of herbs.

“Valparaiso is such a tight-knit and welcoming community, so this is a great place to do business,” Telesky said. “People give such wonderful support to small businesses around the area.”

Telesky stated that her years of operating in the business have taught her two lessons: 1) stepping out of your comfort zone is important for self-growth and development and 2) you can’t expect perfection right away, mastering a craft takes precious time and dedication.

She also has a heart for the community. For example, she created a special candle named Barnwood and Grass that is inspired by Erin’s Farm, a slaughterhouse turned animal sanctuary in Hobart. Proceeds of that candle go to that farm.

“There have been times when I’ve worked with other businesses and charities and cross-collaborated with them,” Telesky said. “Joining this network of local businesses means helping each other and paying it forward, together. To me, community service means doing something that’s bigger than you.”
