A Valpo Life in the Spotlight: Lachlan Streeter

Lachlan Streeter’s picture-perfect life isn’t in front of the camera, but instead behind it.

Streeter’s passion for photography began his senior year of high school. He started small with his local newspaper, and eventually started shooting sports. From there, the Valparaiso University senior found his passion in the world of sports photography and journalism.

“I photograph everything I write and I write about everything I photograph. That’s my motto for sports coverage,” Streeter said.

Streeter said he’s really developed his photography skills since starting school at Valparaiso University in 2018.

“When I came to VU, I started working for the student newspaper, ‘The Torch’, and since then it’s kind of taken off. I’ve created a life for myself here with it. Photography is a lot of fun.” Streeter said.

When he was a freshman, Streeter started out as simply a sports photographer. Over the past four years, he held a variety of positions on the paper, including photo editor, and is now the sports editor for the upcoming school year.

“I started as a non-staffer sports photographer and then in August of my first year the sports editor reached out to me and said ‘hey we’re short on writers how about you come write?I sat on it for a couple of days and figured I would give it a shot,” he said.

Streeter has been an avid sports fan for years. He enjoys the energy and commotion that comes with sports photography. Today, he said he can’t imagine taking photos of anything else.

“Sports is the only thing that I like,” he said. “I played baseball, and being an extrovert, the energy and noise is what really gets me excited. Especially in College, I know Valpo is a mid-major but still a lot of these games can get pretty loud and it’s a lot of fun, it’s really exciting and I enjoy it. It’s also a good break from doing homework and school.”

Streeter’s interest in sports began when he was a kid when he played little league for nine years.

“I did little league because I did not like playing soccer,” he laughed. “It was a lot of fun and then I made that transition from little league to high school and started playing there.”

Streeter is currently enrolled in Valparaiso University’s history education program. His ultimate career goal is to become a history professor at the college level.

“When I was eight I started reading a lot of history books. From that point on, I really just wanted to teach, specifically history. It was a decision I made when I was a lot younger. I plan on hopefully getting a master, or maybe even a Ph.D. I plan on getting a higher degree focusing on history,” he said.
