Aftermath Cidery’s and Running Vines Winery’s 2022 Festival of Magic Brings More Than Just Magic to the Community

Muggles ditched their regular clothes and donned a set of robes for Aftermath Cidery and Running Vines Winery’s annual Festival of Magic on Saturday, July 30. What started as a simple Harry Potter-inspired drink is now a three-day festival that spans two cities and attracts hundreds of people from all over Northwest Indiana. Unlike He-Who-Shall-Not Be-Named, this event is something people won’t be able to stop talking about.

“Me and a lot of my team are big Harry Potter fans. We love the books, love the movies. So, we made a Butterbeer cider when we opened seven years ago, and when it came off tap people were really sad. So we decided five years ago to make a celebration every time we released Butterbeer again. And it kind of just blew up from a release party to this entire festival between Valpo and Chesterton,” said Nicki Caylor, owner of Running Vines Winery and Aftermath Cidery.

To make this huge event possible, Aftermath and Running Vines partnered with many local businesses in both Valparaiso in Chesterton. In Chesterton, they partnered with Three Wicked Apples, Chesterton Toys, Gilberts Candy Confection, the European Market, Upsy Daisy Market, O’Gara and Wilson Booksellers, and Gilberts Candy Shop. In Valparaiso, they partnered with the Valpo Public Library, Valparaiso Events, Fluid, Rocket Fizz, and Aster and Gray.

The best part of the Festival of Magic was all the Harry Potter-themed meals and drinks. There were Troll Boogie platters, Baskalisk Bits boards, and flatbreads humorously called The Harry Platter. Appetizers were themed after the four Hogwarts houses. Customers even got to try all kinds of mouthwatering potions from the Wizarding World such as Polyjuice potion and Love potion.

And of course, don’t forget the Butterbeer! Butterbeer was available as both alcoholic and non-alcoholic so even the young witches and wizards could enjoy a sweet drink.

As if all that wasn’t enough, there were even live owls brought in by Humane Indiana Wildlife so people could see some of the world’s best mail carriers up close.

“I absolutely love that we get to support Humane Indiana Wildlife. I am a huge animal lover, so I just love that we get to give back to something that’s so awesome here in our local community,” said Caylor.

The Festival of Magic was originally meant to be something fun for the family to do together, but it has become so much more. Not only can families have fun, but it also brings people together in a way that only love for such a wonderful story can.

“We want people to have fun. Bring families together, bring the community together. This is about more than just Running Vines or Aftermath. This is about our entire community winning and helping all the other businesses and things in the area,” said Caylor.

This may only be the fifth year that Aftermath and Running Vines has thrown the Festival of Magic, but it is already a huge bright spot in the Northwest Indiana community that gets bigger and better every year. Each year Aftermath and Running Vines forges new partnerships and gives back to the community in new ways with this spectacular event.

“Today we’re completely sold out and tomorrow just sold out too. So, it’s a lot of fun and it’s growing each year and we’ve learned each year how to make it even better,” said Caylor.

With all that said, Aftermath Cidery and Running Vines Winery’s Festival of Magic proves that it doesn’t take magic to bring a community together. All it takes is a little passion.

“Thank you to the community, thank you to all the business partners that we’ve taken on for this. We cannot believe how incredible this is,” said Caylor.
