April is National Pest Management Month

April is National Pest Management Month and with good reason! Spring is one of the busiest seasons for many pest control companies especially within our local Northwest Indiana Communities. "We see a large increase in service calls as the weather starts to warm up,” noted Terry Peek II, owner of MasterTech Pest Control, Inc. “Northwest Indiana has a lot of nuisance pests, but there are also plenty of pests that damage homes and cause health issues.”

Common Pests that Damage Property

  • Carpenter Ants
  • Termites
  • Carpenter Bees
  • Rodents

Common Pests that cause Health Issues

  • Ticks - Lyme Disease
  • Mosquitoes - West Nile Virus
  • Cockroaches - Asthma
  • Bees/Wasps - Stings/Allergic Reactions

There are a few things individuals can do to prevent pests from coming indoors. The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) recommends that homeowners follow these tips to prevent pest infestations:

  • Seal up cracks and small openings along the foundation of the house.
  • Eliminate sources of moisture or standing water.
  • Keep tree branches and other plants cut back from the house.
  • Keep kitchens clean by wiping counters and emptying the garbage frequently.
  • Keep all food containers sealed.
  • Avoid leaving pets’ food dishes out for long periods of time.
  • Keep trash containers clean and sealed, both indoors and outdoors
  • Screen windows and doors.
  • If you see signs of pests or suspect an infestation, contact a licensed pest professional
