The Valparaiso Fire Department was dispatched for a child birth in the area of St. Rd. 49 and Vale Park Road at 0910 this morning. Upon arrival, the responding paramedic rescue unit and fire engine found a 32 year old female that had delivered a child in the back seat of their car on the shoulder of St. Rd. 49, just north of Vale Park Road.

The mother, who was being driven by her husband, was on the way to Porter Regional Hospital from their home in Knox when the delivery occurred. The baby, a boy, was born without any complications just a few minutes prior to the arrival of fire units. Paramedics cut the umbilical cord and rendered routine newborn and maternal care as the mother and her new son were transported to Porter Regional Hospital.

The mother stated that this was her third child and her first boy. Today was her due date. Today’s birth was the fourth for Valparaiso Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedic Wayne Swart, and the third for Firefighter/Paramedic Eric Berg. They were assisted by a paramedic student. Although, the baby was not named after either medic on scene, it was reported that it will be named the same as one of Swart’s sons. Patient privacy laws prevent the release of any patient names.
