BioBlitz and Sustainability Fair Volunteers Needed

Taltree volunteer and Butterfly Interest Group originator, Laura Tucker, has created an interactive display to be presented at BioBlitz, May 15 and 16, at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Taltree Arboretum & Gardens was invited to participate in the Sustainability Fair that accompanies the BioBlitz, and Laura’s design is the perfect model to illustrate the theme of the fair: Celebrate Biodiversity Festival—Every Species Counts—Especially You!

BioBlitz is the third in a series of ten annual National Geographic/National Park Service BioBlitzes leading up to the centennial of the NPS in 2016. The event, which takes place in locations throughout the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, is a 24-hour period in which volunteers count every living thing at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Taltree volunteers can participate in this once in a lifetime event by staffing the booth in order to tell visitors about attracting butterflies and seeing them in action at the arboretum.  The display will feature nectar and food plants that are necessary to attract a variety of butterflies to your garden. Laura has designed handouts and printed dozens of full color photos of butterflies that frequent Taltree Arboretum & Gardens and could easily visit every environmentally sensitive homeowner’s garden.

Volunteers are needed to staff shifts at our booth, which will be located at the Lakeshore’s West Beach, from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Friday, May 15th, and from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 16th.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you will be able to attend the orientation meeting on Friday, May 8th, at 3 p.m. in the Taltree classroom. Call 219 462-0025 or e-mail jstarr@taltree.org.
