SCH-Bishop-Visit-2-17Message of Hope and Healing Delivered to Patients, Staff and Visitors

Bishop Donald J. Hying visited St. Catherine Hospital on Monday, Feb. 13, as one of several stops in Northwest Indiana to observe the World Day of the Sick.

Hying spoke with patients in acute care and surgery, celebrated Mass and met with hospital leaders and staff to offer hope to the sick and inspiration to those in the healthcare profession.

Sr. Mary Ellen Goeller, director of pastoral care at St. Catherine Hospital said healthcare has always been an important part of the mission of the church.

“It is a cornerstone of Jesus’ ministry,” she said. “We are all our brothers’ keeper.”

In the Emergency Department, Hying huddled with staff to commend them for their commitment to the unit where no two days or two hours are alike.

“You are on the front lines of an essential part of our vision,” he said, noting, “Healthcare is the heart of the mission. It is taking care of the sick. It’s what you do so well.”

Leo Correa, who recently began his duties as chief executive officer of St. Catherine Hospital, called the bishop’s visit uplifting and inspirational.
