With nicer weather comes more of an urge to get out and have some fun. Blue Chip Casino, Hotel, and Spa in Michigan City is preparing for the expected larger crowd as they expand their meeting and event facilities by about 15,000 square feet this year. Chris Mahlmann, Founder at Ideas in Motion Media, sat down with a few of Blue Chip’s leaders to get a glimpse of what this expansion means for the community, and how it ties to Blue Chip’s community commitment as well.

Ultimately, the team hopes the expansion will enable the casino to hold even more events and fill available hotel rooms throughout the week. When finished in the fall of 2019, the event center will include a new 11,000-square-foot ballroom and 3,800-square-feet of pre-function space. Blue Chip Casino is determined and passionate about giving back to the community they call home, whether through expanding facilities to contribute to economic development, or supporting community organizations.

“Blue Chip brings many things to Michigan City, and helping give back to our community is one of them. We support an array of non-profits in town,” said Brenda Temple, vice president and general manager at Blue Chip Casino.

Many leaders at the company are actively volunteering or sit on boards of non-profit organizations across the region. Some of these include Rotary, the Salvation Army, United Way, and Paladin.

“We always look to give back to our community because as community members ourselves, and a business, we want to see our community thrive,” said Bret Cox, assistant general manager at Blue Chip Casino.

Working successfully in the community also means maintaining healthy working relationships with local leaders.

The Casino event center is home to many different events held by non-profit organizations. From lip-sync battle fundraisers, to the Chamber’s annual dinner, the expert Blue Chip staff strive to make each organization’s event a success.

Aside from the impressive casino and gaming options, Blue Chip also offers other attractions such as William B’s Steakhouse (which has received rave reviews from clientele); Spa Blue for the ultimate relaxing and rejuvenation experience; It’s Vegas Baby! - the party-all-night hotspot; The Game sports bar and restaurant with wall-to-wall TVs and 34 beers on tap; and the cherished Options Buffet and nearby Rocks Lounge.

As the expansion continues, team members at Blue Chip never lose sight of their golden rules, also known as the four pillars set by Boyd Gaming: working smart, having integrity, understanding the value of relationships, and exceeding expectations. These pillars serve casino guests for sure, but also Blue Chip team members and the community at large.

Due to tremendous demand for meeting space, Blue Chip is headed in the right direction with the new developments. But with expansion also comes the need to recruit staff to make it all happen. As one of the largest employers in the county, the casino actively hires staff across all departments, looking for the perfect fits for their culture and healthy business model.

“The culture of Boyd Gaming could be described as a family-run organization traded on the New York stock exchange, and at the heart of our culture is the four pillars,” Temple said.
