Brownie Girl Scout Troop 86 from Central Elementary School in Valparaiso visited the Old Jailhouse Museum on April 3rd to complete requirements for their “Celebrating Community” badge. The girls learned about Porter County through displays, pictures, a video, and an interactive game.
The highlight of the visit was a canoe named Makeba which two women, Amy Lukas and Mary Catterlin, made by carving out an old cottonwood tree. Amy and Mary then circumnavigated Lake Michigan for 3 months in the summer of 2012.
The museum has a “Dream Wall” where girls were asked to write about something they hope to accomplish like these 2 women did.
