Business Spotlight Good Guys Collision – Merrillville, Indiana

clay good-guysGood Guys Collision of Merrillville, is a company that prides itself on outstanding work and exceptional service.

As one of three founding partners in the company, Clay Moser’s hope was to combine his mechanical knowledge and people skills to build a business on the foundation of outstanding service. “I turned 50 right about that time and had a huge midlife crisis,” he said. “I was working a lot of hours and it was killing me, so I decided it would be better to work for myself.” With two highly skilled technicians as his partners, the team had the ability to take on even the most challenging vehicle repairs.

Here, Clay Moser, Owner/President offers some background on the business.

Tell us a little about your business…

We’re a full-service collision repair shop. We’ll handle the details of insurance claims for people, and we’ll do pretty much anything a customer might need that involves fixing the exterior of a vehicle — including boats as well. Good Guys does all work on-site, and is focused on providing high quality results. It’s my personal goal to make customers feel good about their experience here.

What sets your business apart?

I really wanted to bring back the idea of high-quality service. It’s so hard to find that in our industry, but it’s so important. We’re very customer-oriented, and I personally connect with almost everyone that comes into Good Guys Collision. I know my customers’ names, and their kids’ names. That’s a quality that was really important in life, in the small Iowa town I grew up — and I wanted to bring that here. I enjoy talking to anyone and everyone, I give honest answers to their questions, and it’s my hope that this gives them a sense of trust and satisfaction that they don’t experience elsewhere.

That commitment sets our work apart from others, too. We’re here to give customers the best, showroom-quality repair. We put our best work into every car — whether it’s a Chevy or Bentley — and do our best to give people more than they were expecting.

Small businesses present challenges. What are some challenges you have faced?

Insurance companies are evolving, and they’re getting more frugal. They think it should be cheaper to do repairs than it really is. This means they want us to use inferior parts that make the vehicle appear to be fixed, when there’s really more to do in order to get it up to top safety standards. We work to a more rigorous set of specs so we can feel confident in letting families know they can trust their car for their day-to-day driving, road trips, etc. So, getting paid properly to make that happen is often a challenge.

Why did you decide to do business with Horizon Bank?

I met a Horizon Bank representative, Mary Wright, at a networking group. I would always ask her questions about finances, and so on. She was relentless in trying to help me, even though I didn’t have an account there — I was just an average Jo Schmo as far as she knew.

So because of her help and the personal interest she took in my needs, I started doing my personal banking with Horizon — and now we have a business connection as well. I refer lots of people to Horizon now!

Horizon Bank has helped us secure the high-investment equipment we need to do the best auto repair work possible. This is the equipment that’s necessary for being considered by insurance companies in order to do work for their customers. Horizon has made this possible for us, so we’re on the referral lists when auto insurance providers need to pay for repairs.
