Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ) held their 54th Annual Trustees’ Scholarship Gala Saturday evening. Named “Light the Way for Students,” the gala raised the funds to help make students’ dreams come true. 300 people, all wearing elegant attire, attended the gala, despite the surprising late April snow. Attendees ranged from students, alumni, trustees, professors, benefactors, and friends of CCSJ. They enjoyed cocktails, hor d’oeuvres, live music by Phase4 Band, a raffle, a phenomenal meal, and dancing.
Larry Meyers, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said that the generosity of the donors makes it possible for students to get the quality education that they deserve. Since most of the student population are eligible for financial aid, scholarships are essential.
“Tonight is about giving awards, raising funds, and enjoying each other’s company,” Meyers said.
President of of CCSJ, Dr. Amy McCormick, noted that tonight is one of her favorite events, especially because students are a part of the presentation.
“I love that the students get the opportunity to tell their stories,” McCormick said. “For many of them, without scholarships, they wouldn’t be here.”
McCormick hopes that the gala will allow the community to know what CCSJ is all about. For McCormick, CCSJ is a private institution that is little, but mighty, and is always growing.
“We are a gem in the region,” McCormick said. “We are small, faith-based, and the only Catholic College in NWI region. We are an incredible asset.”
Fr. Kevin M. Scalf, Humanities Chairperson, noted that the gala showcased the mission of the college.
“When you look at our core values, and how many people we’ve educated over the years, it’s a testament to all the people who made the college what it is,” Fr. Scalf said. “It’s a great place to be and we are blessed.”
Nicco Vicari is a senior at CCSJ. He is originally from Florida, but was brought to CCSJ through a bowling scholarship. He presented the St. Joseph the Worker award and testified about his experience as a student.
“What brought me here was bowling, but what kept me here is the passion of every single faculty member that walk through the doors every morning to challenge each student to be the best versions of themselves,” Vicari said. “With that knowledge that I’ve gained here, I’m blessed to start the next chapter of my life and continue my education.”
Will Glaros, a CCSJ Board Member, was the recipient of the prestigious award and is known as a man who uses his many talents to benefit the community. Instead of reading from a planned speech, Glaros went off script.
“I am seldom at a loss for words, but tonight I am,” Glaros said. "I rather read from my heart so that you know what this means to me. I’ve lived here for 50 years, the Region is a special place. I love being able to give to people in need and young people who are seeking a path."
