Census Update for Valparaiso

This is the last week for Valparaiso residences to return their census forms before the census enumeration operations begin on May 3rd.

  • As of April 13th, 75% of Valparaiso residences have mailed back their census forms.
  • The City's participation rate is 3% higher than the state average of 72% and 9% higher than the national average of 66%.
  • The current participation rates are still behind the final 2000 Census mail-in rates of 80% for Valparaiso, 76% for Indiana and 72% for the United States.
  • Anyone who has not received a census form is urged to call 1-866-872-6868 for a census form.
  • Census Takers have taken an oath of nondisclosure, will have government ID's, will never ask to enter your home and will ask only the questions that appear on the census form.

2010 Census Information

  • Extra Census Questionnaires will be at the Valparaiso Public Library "A Be Counted Site"
  • A Census-staffed "Questionnaire Assistance Center (QAC)" is located at City Hall and will be staffed until April 19th
    • Monday and Wednesday from 10 am to 1 pm
    • Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 1 pm to 4 pm
  • April 20th is the last date for receiving census forms in the mail (all non-responding addresses will be enumerated)
  • May 3rd to Mid July census enumeration visits (at least 6 times for each address)
  • The estimated cost to the government for sending enumerators to non-responding addresses is $60 to $70 per address
