Chesterton High School Seniors Advance as 2016 Merit Finalists

CHS-Merit-Finalists-2016Seven Chesterton High School seniors have been named finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) program. They are now among some 16,000 secondary finalists throughout the United States vying for 7,400 National Merit Scholarships. Merit Scholars will be selected in March or April. Those students are Christine Craig, Keely Ellman, Jared Gallina, Frederic Owens, Joel Peterson, Nathan Poczekay and Hunter Warren.

Craig, daughter of Christopher and Vickie Craig of Valparaiso, is a member of National Honor Society and Academic Super Bowl. She is also a peer tutor. She is undecided in her field of study at this time.

Ellman, daughter of Courtney and Mathew Ellman of Valparaiso, is a cadet teacher and tutor. She plans to study secondary education/English.

Gallina, son of Kathleen Gallina of Valparaiso, is a member of the Academic Super Bowl and Science Olympiad. He is also active in intramural basketball. He plans to study areonautical engineering.

Owens, son of Fred and Laura Owens of Chesterton, is a member of the Debate tam, Trojan Guard Marching Band, National Honor Society. He is also an Eagle Scout and is active in intramural basketball. He plans to study engineering.

Peterson, son of David and Merrie Peterson of Chesterton, is a member of the Trojan Guard Marching Band, Debate team and the League of Legends. He plans to study engineering.

Poczekay, son of Tom and Jamie Poczekay of Westville, is a member of Trojan Guard Marching Band, Debate team and Science Olympiad. He is also an Eagle Scout. He plans to study aeronautical engineering

Warren, son of Seth and Maureen Warren of Chesterton, is a member of National Honor Society, Debate team and is active in soccer, track and the intramural basketball. He plans to study business administration/political science.
