Chicago Street Theatre 2016 Summer Camp Registration Now Open

CST-Summer-Camp-2016-CollageRegistrations are now open for Chicago Street Theatre's Children's Theatre Works Summer Programming in theatre education. Parents can register by phone or in person at the CST box office or go online to get their kids into the act with a variety of courses, workshops and day camps for students ages 4 through high school. Classes run June 13 through July 23. Box Office hours are Noon to 4PM weekdays and parents can enroll their kids at 219-464-1636 X1. Online registration forms, as well as course dates and descriptions are available 24/7 at www.chicagostreet.org. All courses are held at Chicago Street Theatre located at 154W. Chicago Street in downtown Valparaiso.

Classes stress the importance of creativity, confidence, and teamwork through the collaborative art of making theatre. Students will engage in theatre games, scenes, and improvisations to exercise their imaginations, sense of play and creative problem solving skills. The Summer's Shakespeare workshops help give students an understanding of text and character development that will assist them in other applied arts and studies. CTW believes that drama skills are skills for life and is happy to have served the community for over 20 years. Summer is the perfect jumping in time to give your young ones the gift of theatre through an assortment of fun and interactive experiences with CST's trained and knowledgeable staff of instructors.

Courses, Workshops and Day Camps being offered for Summer 2016 are:

LET'S PLAY! (Ages 4-6) - $65
This fun-filled camp intruduces the theatre environment. Students will develop basic skills while playing cooperative theatre games, and participating in imaginative activities. The emphasis is on creative expression through structured play. The final class includes a Certificate Ceremony.

STAGE ONE (Ages 5-7) - $75
Youngsters will have a wonderful week getting introduced to the theatre and stepping on stage! An fun-filled, no pressure introduction to acting. The final class includes a staged “performance,” complete with Certificate Ceremony.

STAGE TWO (Ages 8-11) - $85
A stimulating opportunity for young thespians to expand upon their current skills and learn new techniques. The one-week camp culminates in a short staged piece and Certificate Ceremony.

CAMP IMPROV (Ages 11-14) - $65
Log off the screens and see how much fun you can have working together with your peers to create hilarious moments! Explore the concepts of improvisations through games and scenes in an incredibly supportive atmosphere. The only side effects include developing strong listening and communication skills, living in the moment, and respect and appreciation of each other's creative abilities. Laughing and fun are guaranteed! Certificates handed out at the final class.

CREATING CHARACTERS (Ages 9-13) - $95
Have you ever wanted to explore your favorite super hero or princess? Link, Harry Potter, Superman, Zelda or Elsa? Through theatre exercises and craft activities, students develop their unique interpretation of memorable characters while learning and applying essential acting techniques for their original monologue performance.

AUDITION TECHNIQUES (Ages 9+) - $55
Designed to inform and ease anxiety, students will learn how to handle cold readings, prepare monologues, and develop solid audition techniques.

  • Ages 14+ - Tuesday & Thursday, June 14 & 16- 3:00 to 4:30 pm with Braden Cleary

PAGE TO STAGE CAMP (Ages 9+) - $95
Through amusing activities, students develop script ideas while learning and applying essential writing skills and acting techniques for their original scripted performance. Collaboration and a basic understanding of scene structure will also be covered in this upbeat and educational camp.

SHAKESPEARE IN SHORTS (Ages 8-13) - $200
This camp introduces students to the literature of Shakespeare through the performance of shortened adaptations in the original language. The play, The Tempest, is divided into five acts, with students assigned a different role in each act, allowing all students to play a variety of roles and to learn the play from different perspectives. The charming, but bare bones approach of performing Shakespeare in t-shirts and shorts guarantees an immersion in the imaginative language of the bard. The culmination includes two main-stage performances, in tandem with the Teen Shakespeare Workshop.

  • PERFORMANCES in Theatre - JULY 22 @ 5:00 pm and JULY 23 @ 3:00 pm.
  • Class Showcase & Certificate Ceremony on JULY 23 at the after-show celebration.
  • ** PAYMENT PLAN AVAILABLE - $100 deposit due with registration by June 1, $50 due July 1 & $50 due July 15. Students enrolled in the Fall, 2015 and/or the Spring, 2016 CTW classes may deduct a 10% ($20) discount from tuition.

SHAKESPEARE TEEN WORKSHOP (Ages 14-18)
This intensive six-week workshop will focus on Shakespeare’s, The Tempest. Students will be cast in roles, learn all aspects of acting in a production, including the use of the original language and iambic pentameter “clues,” along with historical references to clothing, style and behavior. A “Yard Show” will also be a part of the production, giving students the opportunity to re-create the atmosphere of The Globe Theatre of Shakespeare’s time, by performing as jugglers, clowns, and musicians. This workshop features two main-stage performances and pre-show participation in Chicago Street’s annual Shakespeare in The Park production in Central Park Plaza.
