City of Gary Has Goal to Return Millions to Gary Residents and Will Host a Job Compliance Forum

City-of-GaryThe City of Gary is starting 2013 with important and helpful news for its residents. A press conference on Earned Income Tax Credit information is scheduled for Tuesday, January 8th at 10:00a.m. at Gary City Hall, 401 Broadway, and a Job Compliance Community Forum will be held on Wednesday, January 9th at 5:30p.m. at the Genesis Convention Center.

On Tuesday, January 8th at 10:00a.m. at Gary City Hall, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson will join representatives from the Urban League of NWI, Former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Office, the University of Chicago, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and True Partners Consulting to discuss returning potentially millions of dollars to the citizens of Gary through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

By applying for the EITC, households with three or more children, earning less than $50,270 can receive up to almost $6,000 or $5,891 in refunds. More information will be shared at the press conference on how the program works and how the City of Gary will be partnering with the Urban League and the IRS to assist residents in claiming money that is rightfully theirs.

“During these hard financial times, it’s important that our citizens are made aware of the dollars that belong to them,” said Mayor Freeman-Wilson. “More important, we want to provide the assistance they need in filing their taxes to ensure that they collect every penny they are owed.”

On Wednesday, January 9th at 5:30p.m. at the Genesis Convention Center, Freeman-Wilson will be joined by Congressman Pete Visclosky to host a Job Compliance Community Forum. This forum will spotlight how the City of Gary addresses compliance on job sites throughout the city. Topics will include compliance guidelines for the local, state and federal projects taking place in the city, the jobs associated with them and what Gary residents can do to be considered for employment on these types of jobs. Representatives from compliance and other city departments will also be attendance to participate in the Q & A portion of the forum.

“This forum is meant to educate the public on how compliance works,” said Freeman-Wilson. “We want Gary residents to be considered for employment on the major projects that are coming to our city, and we want them to be prepared. This forum is one of several ways that we intend to keep citizens informed and trained for these job opportunities.”
