The Valparaiso University women’s tennis team continued competition at the MVC Individual Championship in Waterloo, Iowa on Saturday. Junior Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) enjoyed a victory to garner fifth place in the top flight of singles play.

How It Happened

  • Czerwonka picked up a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set win over UNI’s Harri Proudfoot in the fifth-place match. The triumph allowed the Valpo junior to complete her weekend of singles on a high note after a setback in Friday’s first round.
  • Freshmen Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) and Amanda Tabanera (Valencia, Calif. / Valencia) were awarded fifth place in Flight 2 and Flight 3, respectively. Both players’ scheduled opponents for their fifth-place matches defaulted due to injuries.
  • Sophomore Isabella Schoolcraft (Bargersville, Ind. / Center Grove) competed in a tight fifth-place match with UNI’s Thaissa Moreira, but fell in a close third-set tiebreak after winning the opening set and dropping the second on a set tiebreak. Moreira won the match 4-6, 7-6(1), 10-8. Freshman Demi Jhaveri (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) also played in a fifth-place match on Saturday, but Drake’s Kelsey Neville edged out the win.
  • After advancing thanks to a first-round win on Friday, senior Dao Sysouvanh (Sun Prairie, Wis. / Sun Prairie) dropped her Flight 6 semifinal to Missouri State’s Alyson Piskulic. Sysouvanh won the opening set 6-4, but then lost a tight second set 5-7 before falling 3-6 in a traditional third set that decided the match.
  • The only Valpo doubles pair in action on Saturday was Sysouvanh/Tabanera, which incurred an 8-3 defeat.
