The last thing most people want when they get sick is a trip to the emergency department. Oftentimes, emergency care isn’t necessary to get you on your way again. Community Healthcare System’s new Immediate Care facility in Munster opened January 28 to help patients get the highest level of care they need without a trip to the ED. They hosted an open house at the new building on Saturday.

Immediate care centers are good for the flu, a suspected sinus infection, or any other ailment that has you feeling down, but isn’t necessarily an emergency. Located in Munster at 1946 N. 45th St., right on the Highland-Munster border, the center is designed to deliver fast and convenient medical attention with no appointment necessary.

“It’s a new area for us. We’re more available to patients who used to commute to see us at our Schererville and St. John locations,” said Mark Feldner, M.D., medical director of the Munster Immediate Care Center. “This is all about availability and accessibility. That’s what we’re bringing to this, and we know our patients trust Community’s reputation for practicing good medicine wherever we’re located.”

The office is near residences and neighborhoods, making it simple for patients such as Marilyn Spencer who used to commute to St. John or Schererville for Immediate Care.

“I’m a longtime patient with Community. I go out of my way to stay with their care whenever possible,” Spencer said. “I’m only 3 or 4 miles from this new location. It’s nice and I’m glad that it’s so close to home. I appreciate Community being there for us. We’ve always had good experiences with them.”

The location features seven exam rooms with all the imaging equipment, tools, and staff necessary to make a quick diagnosis. It also is directly attached to Northwestern Imaging, offering Immediate Care patients a convenient option for advanced MRI, CT and X-ray services.

“People can come in and get the care they need and their imaging done without the extra costs of an emergency department visit,” said Terry Cunningham, an MRI technologist with Northwest Imaging. “They can come in, get a CT scan, get an X-ray, get their answers, and be on their way without needing to make any other stops.”

“Sometimes families need care right away that is easily accessible with doctors they trust,” said Mary Fetsch, director of Marketing and Community Relations at Community Hospital. “That’s what Immediate Care is all about. People can come here and know that they’re going to receive the highest-level of care and be able to follow up with a Community Healthcare physician or at any of our hospitals or outpatient centers around the area.”

The Munster Immediate Care Center is now open from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., on weekends. Learn more at
