Community Invited to VNA Open House

The Visiting Nurse Association of Porter County (VNA) has moved, but not far. The VNA has expanded its campus with the renovation of the former Ivy Tech Community College building, previously a racquetball club, at 2401 Valley Drive in Valparaiso, just around the corner from the previous VNA offices on Marquette Street. The building was purchased after Ivy Tech moved to their new campus on the southeast side of Valparaiso.

The VNA will host an open house for interested members of the community, as well as for families of the VNA staff and volunteers on Sunday, November 22 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. The open house will include tours of the new building and refreshments. Information about the history of the VNA and programs and services will also be available.

The VNA has provided care to area residents since 1970, beginning with one nurse and a physical therapist in a small house at 2304 N. Calumet Avenue. Since then, the VNA has grown from serving just 17 patients in the first year, to more than 2,600 in 2008. Services provided by the VNA have expanded as well and now include skilled nursing; physical, occupational and speech therapy; home and inpatient hospice care; home health aides; companion homemakers; nutritional counseling; medical social services; Meals on Wheels; Lifeline; telehealth; and community health screenings and education.

The VNA has moved twice during its nearly 40-year history, and was at the previous location on Marquette Street since 1984.
