Cows and Cow Costumes Come Together for CowtoberFest 2013

Fair Oaks Farms hosted their 9th annual CowtoberFest on a windy and cold Saturday this year, but that didn’t seem to stop the festivities. The farm, which regularly hosts visitors for their cows and pigs, invited families out for various events like a costume parade, a Radio Disney event, and an intimate concert from country artist Chris Cavanaugh. There were also various vendors from around the state in the morning, selling items from soap to bed sheets.

The day started with a trick-or-treat for all of the kids dressed in costumes and then lead through a short costume parade around the vicinity to showcase their character of choice. Some were especially creative by making their own outfits - two in particular worked hard on their NASA spacesuit and a real-life looking combine harvester. The fun continued after that in the back by their corn maze with various activities for the kids. Their rock wall, moon bounce and barrel rides were all very popular throughout the afternoon. Joe Fetty, who works at Fair Oaks Farms a couple days a week and is a retired high school principal who worked in the position for thirty two years, drove around the barrel ride said, “I like that everybody comes here happy and is ready to have a good time. That’s where I can come in and help everyone have a better time - like today, we’ve been rolling along, it’s a bit chilly but we’re still going.”

At 3:30 in the main building, a Radio Disney DJ and a few others gathered around to help with the dancing. Children danced for a bit in a large circle, even the parents jumped in to get involved with the practiced routine. There was even a hula-hooping contest between the kids. After that, pig tours were still going and the birthing barn was open for spectators to view before the concert that night.

Overall it the wind didn’t push out the fun of the Cowtober attendees and the event went on throughout the planned schedule. Next year will be another one to look forward to, for cows and cow costumes alike.
