Crusaders Blank Panthers on Saturday

valpouniversitymenstennisThe Valparaiso men's tennis team dropped just one set in a convincing 7-0 victory over visiting Eastern Illinois Saturday at the Courts of NWI.

Sophomores Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) kicked off doubles play with a 6-3 victory over Robert Skolik/Preston Touliatos at No. 1 doubles.

Dave Bacalla (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) and Chase Hamilton (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) secured the doubles point a few minutes later by virtue of a 7-5 triumph at No. 2 doubles.

Garrett Gardner (Poland, Ohio/Poland) and Lucas Waak (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) added a 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 3 doubles for good effect.

The Crusaders met little resistance in singles play, as five of the six matches were completed in straight sets.

Sophomore Kyle Dunn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) opened the action with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Grant Reiman at No. 5. Schorsch kept the momentum swinging with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2.

Junior Michael Savaglio (Kenosha, Wis./Mary D. Bradford) clinched the match following his 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Trent Reiman.

Waak took care of business at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-1 result. Bacalla was victorious atop singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Skolik.

Gardner polished things off with a 6-3, 0-6, 10-5 win against Touliatos at No. 3.

Valpo (4-0) wraps up this week's action when it travels to Evanston on Sunday evening to take on #26 Northwestern. The Wildcats are 4-4; however, seven of their matches have been against ranked opponents. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm CT. Live stats will be available courtesy of Northwestern Athletics.
