Dinner for a cause

Are you hungry for some spaghetti? On June 27, Life Care Center of the Willows is hosting their annual spaghetti dinner. All funds from the dinner will go toward the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club wheelchair ramp team, who install temporary ramps for community members in need.

The steel ramps cost around $5,500 and are typically installed in about an hour. Made from steel instead of wood, the removable, temporary wheelchair ramps are perfect for those who need a short-term solution to accessing their homes.

With potential hip replacements, surgeries, or rehabilitation, one never knows when they might need a wheelchair or walker. Having the Kiwanis team come out and install a temporary ramp to help such individuals is a much-needed service.

The Kiwanis club work mostly with youth, but the need for ramps has no age limit. The spaghetti dinner is an excellent opportunity for the Kiwanis to interact with a different sector of the community. The dinner also gives Life Care Center of the Willows’ staff and residents a chance to interact with the Kiwanis.

Life Care Center of the Willows has been hosting their annual spaghetti dinner to raise funds for this project for six years. The senior living community will often connect individuals coming through their facility to the Kiwanis ramp team. Having this event gives staff and residents an opportunity to help their own and to become a larger part of the community.

“It gives the residents and staff the ability to assist individuals in the community who could benefit from the wheelchair ramp,” said Brandi Costello, Director of Business Development at Life Care Center of the Willows.

Receiving donations from organizations such as Dunes Hospice, American Choice Home Health, Family Express, Strack & Van Til, Sam’s Club, Costco, and Texas Corral, Life Care Center of the Willows will be serving up plates of spaghetti, salad, and—new this year—chicken alfredo. Diners can choose to come inside and partake in an all-you-can-eat meal, or get a carry-out meal. No need to even leave your car, just pull right on up to the portico.

The spaghetti dinner will take place on Thursday, June 27 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Life Care Center of the Willows in Valparaiso. Tickets cost $7 for adults, and $5 for seniors and children under the age of 12. All dine-in tickets are all-you-can-eat, and there is also a 4-meal family deal for $20. You can contact Costello at Life Care Center of the Willows to purchase tickets, or purchase them at the door.

“It’s going to be a relaxed, laid-back environment. Come, enjoy, and have a good evening,” Costello said.
