Discoveries Unlimited Ends Spring Program with a Cosmic Adventure

Discoveries Unlimited concluded the Spring STEM Mentor program with a cosmic adventure at the Challenger Learning Center in Hammond, Indiana. challenger-learning-center1The Mentors and Mentees (M &Ms) worked together to “Rendezvous with a Comet”. The simulated NASA mission was a culmination of all the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) activities they have experienced during the course of the program. M&Ms performed in various roles required by the simulated mission such as life support, navigation, communications, isolation (robotics) and probe (engineering). They utilized their analytical and problem-solving skills when faced with mission challenges such as “computer malfunctions” or “an unknown anomaly”. The M&Ms even discovered a “new comet” and named it “DU 2010”. The event was sponsored by the School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics at Purdue University Calumet.

For 6th-8th grade girls and their parents/guardians interested in participating in the Fall STEM Mentor program, Discoveries Unlimited is holding an Information Meeting on May 20, 2010. The meeting will be held at the Valparaiso YMCA from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to get to know Discoveries Unlimited staff and Mentors and learn more about participating in the mentoring program.
