District Plans May Composting Workshops

recycleStaff from the Recycling and Waste Reduction District of Porter County will teach residents how to compost in their backyards during May workshops at various locations around Porter County. Composting offers a unique opportunity to contribute to and directly benefit from part of the solid waste solution, recycling, and results in a rich soil amendment great for gardening purposes.

Workshops are planned for 6 p.m. on each of these dates: May 14 in the Woodland Park Blue Spruce Room, 2100 Willowcreek Road, Portage; May 15, 23, 24 in the Sunset Hill Farm County Park Interpretive Center, 775 Meridian Rd., Valparaiso; and May 30 in the Hebron Community Center, 611 N. Main St.

Online registration has begun and is available at www.ItMeansTheWorld.org. The registration fee of $13 includes a sturdy backyard composting bin along with handy guidebooks to backyard and worm composting. Registration deadline is May 13.

Attendees will learn how to backyard compost, start their own vermicomposting bins, incorporate compost into their yards or gardens and more.
