Dr. Daniel Keilman Receives United Way Success By 6 Service to Children Award

Daniel-KeilmanThe recipient of the 2012-2013 United Way Success By 6 Service to Children award was Dr. Daniel Keilman. He was recognized and presented with the award at the 2013 United Way of Porter County Campaign Celebration.

Dr. Keilman is a Northwest Indiana advocate for children and families. He has been a lifelong educator and mentor who has served as a teacher, counselor, principal, and college professor in the Northwest Indiana education system. Most notably he served as principal in the Duneland School Corporation. It was during this time that he learned of a dynamic program geared toward teaching child development practices to families, Parents as Teachers. Dr. Keilman became certified in this subject and returned to Chesterton to develop the first Parents as Teachers program in Northwest Indiana. Today this is the longest running Parents as Teachers program in the state and spans 25 years. The Parents as Teachers program is funded in part by the United Way Success By 6 Initiative.

Dr. Keilman is tireless in serving the Northwest Indiana community and although retired, holds memberships in several civic organizations including the Chesterton-Porter Rotary, Duneland Family YMCA, Exchange Club, Kiwanis, Duneland Education Foundation, Duneland Resale Shop. He is also a Steering Committee Member for SUCCESS BY 6 and remains active as an adjunct professor at Indiana University Northwest.
