Dr. Michael McGee to Speak about Violence and Trauma as Public Health Crisis on Friday, April 9, at IUN

Dr. Michael McGee, M.D., M.P.H., medical director for Emergency Medical Services at Methodist Hospitals and president and CEO for the Methodist ER Group, Northwest Emergency Associates, LLC, will deliver a presentation, “Public Health Grand Rounds: Violence and Trauma - an Urban Public Health Crisis,” at Indiana University Northwest on Friday, April 9, at 12:30 p.m. in Raintree Hall 102. The public is invited to attend this free event, which is sponsored by the IU Northwest College of Health and Human Services.

McGee will discuss his personal experiences treating victims of violence in the emergency room, and he will speak to the choices individuals make that can help them avoid similar circumstances. There will be a slide presentation as part of the program. Note: Some images may be graphic and disturbing, so parental guidance is strongly advised.

McGee, a Gary native and Lew Wallace High School graduate, received a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Psychology from Purdue University. He also earned a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Illinois – Chicago and a Medical Doctorate from Rush Medical College in Chicago. McGee completed his internship and residency in the Department of Emergency Medicine at New York University (NYU)/Bellevue Hospital Medical Center in New York City. He later worked as an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Emory/Grady Medical Center in Atlanta.

In January 2005, Dr. McGee was called to duty at Methodist Hospital when he had to assume responsibility for the care of his 93-year-old grandmother after the passing of his mother, Azrie Kinsey, who was a nurse at Methodist for more than 30 years. McGee became the chief and medical director for the Emergency Medicine Department at Methodist Hospitals in Gary and Merrillville in August 2006. He is also the medical director for the IU Northwest Health and Wellness Center, which opened on campus in 2009.
