Dr. Porterfield Hosts Helpful Health Class

Dr-porterfield-class-2Chiropractic is reaching more and more people as time goes by. Though there will always be skeptics, the practice is gaining followers. Dr. Ryan Porterfield, owner of Porterfield Family Chiropractic in Valparaiso, is determined to bring knowledge to as many people as he can.

“My mission is to improve my patients’ quality of life,” he said. “We do not try to ram our beliefs down anyone’s throats, we just provide information to help people make a more informed decision.”

And he provides all the information that one could hope to get at his weekly health classes. These classes, normally held on Tuesdays at 6pm, are open to the public and new patients under Dr. Porterfield’s care.

“In this class we do talk about chiropractic, but we also talk about overall health,” Dr. Porterfield said. “We go over the definition of it and then talk about different areas of chiropractic care.”

The class is free and (and he give you pizza) and lasts about an hour. He talks about what can cause spinal dislocations, or subluxations, and what they affect in the body.

“When different parts of the spinal column are subluxated, it can cut off signals from the brain to certain parts of the body because the vertebrae are slightly twisted and pressing on different nerves,” he explained. “This can cause pain, tingling, numbness, and different symptoms in different parts of the body.”

When the spine is realigned, the nerves are able to work, relieving the pain or other symptoms. But Dr. Porterfield said that the body needs time to adjust and heal, a 90-day healing period.

“The problem today is that we can get anything we want instantly with the help of technology,” he said. “Technology is great, but we’re used to instant gratification. We expect the same results with our bodies, and it doesn’t happen. The body needs time to heal and when we take the time we need to let our bodies bounce back we’ll have a better quality of life.”
