Eighth grader, Kary Stevick, won honorable mention, along with a monetary award, in the annual poetry contest sponsored by the Valparaiso Women's Club. There were over 250 entries and Kary's poem, Them Middle School Boys, was one of the top ten chosen. She was invited to a reception held at the Women's Club in honor of the winners where they received their awards and read their poems. It was my pleasure to attend the awards ceremony with Kary and her mother.

Those of us who are familiar with Kary's writing are not surprised by her success. Congratulations, Kary!

Them Middle-School Boys
By Kary Stevick

How about them Middle-School Boys
Ain’t they cute?
Filling our brains
With flirtatious cues.

Boying during recess
Flirting with the whole school
Concentration never
Thinking all they do is cool.

Look at them Middle-School Boys
Their long-hair flying
Trying to be like Justin Beiber
But nobody’s buying

Them not-for-nothing Middle-School Boys
Ain’t they interesting?
Showing emotions rarely
Our hearts they are stealing.

How to be a Middle-School Boy?
What, are you crazy!?
Some of you were born one,
If you’re a girl, be glad you aren’t already lazy.
