Eighth graders who are graduating from area middle schools are encouraged to apply for an innovative four-day summer camp organized by the Porter County Career and Technical Center, Ivy Tech Community College and the Center of Workforce Innovations.
The camp will be held from June 16-19 at the Career Center, 1005 N. Franklin St. in Valparaiso from 8 a.m. to noon free of charge.
The residential camp for selected eighth graders exposes campers to the world of manufacturing, television production and health care. The camp will provide a hands-on learning experience through customized curriculum, a plant tour and college visit. Students will also get a taste of computer aided drafting (CAD),electronics and machining. The final day of the camp is expected to last until 12:30 p.m. Lunch and snacks will be provided each day.
The students need transportation to and from the Career Center each morning. A bus will be provided for the field trip. The camp is open to students who completed eight grade at Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Willowcreek, Fegely, Morgan, Washington, Kouts, Union Township, Hobart, Chesterton, Boone Grove or Hebron middle schools.
The Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning and the Indiana Education Roundtable are sponsors. Participants must commit to attending all four days.
