“Expression in Color” Work by Virginia Philips and Julia Holmaas

Expression-in-ColorLarge colorful paintings with various degrees of abstraction are the hallmark of guest artist Virginia Phillips. A member of the Art Barn Group and a student of German Expressionist Konrad Juestel, Virginia paints in a style reminiscent of Matisse, Gauguin and Van Gogh. Her works are to be found in collections throughout the United States and abroad. The show features current paintings, many from three ongoing series: Sky, Lake and Dunes – exploring different moods and personalities of the dune country, Michigan City Lighthouse – inspired by photographs taken by Ryan Groecman and Red Umbrellas at the Duomo, Florence Italy.

Contrasting and complementing Virginia’s paintings are works by SSAA member Julia Holmaas. Julia is known for her use of clear colors in transparent watercolor and small plein air oil paintings painted in the US, Mexico and Italy.

You are invited to the Opening Reception and First Friday Celebration Friday, June 3, 5-8 PM (CST). Meet and talk to the artists at the Southern Shore Art Gallery while enjoying refreshments and appetizers.

In addition over twenty galleries, businesses and restaurants will be open in Michigan City’s historic Uptown Arts District.
