Fireworks on the Lakefront Attracts 17,000+

duneland-fireworks-2013On Friday, July 5, more than 15,000 people filled Indiana nes State Park and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore for the 5th Annual Fireworks on the Lakefront event.

Despite the postponement – or perhaps because of it – the 5th Annual Fireworks on the Lakefront event enjoyed record attendance last Friday, July 5. Beginning around noon, an estimated 17,000+ Duneland residents and visitors flocked to the water’s edge at Indiana Dunes State Park and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to experience one of the largest beachfront fireworks show in Northwest Indiana. Flat water, clear skies and moderate temperatures created prime conditions for the celebration.

“We’re very pleased that this has turned into such a popular event, and we’re grateful to all of our partners for their assistance in making the Fireworks on the Lakefront happen,” says Brandt Baughman, Property Manager at Indiana Dunes State Park. “It’s wonderful that over 17,000 people were able to take part in the event and were able to enjoy a terrific show, a beautiful evening, great food and the Indiana Dunes.”

logoWhile waiting for the fireworks display to begin, guests were treated to the specialties of Ben’s Soft Pretzels, Leroy’s “Hotstuff” Mexican Food, Val’s Famous Pizza & Grinders, Dr. Vegetable, and Dairy Queen. To further complement the festivities, staff members from the Duneland Family YMCA sold glow sticks to young children for take-home souvenirs, and Porter County musicians Chris & Lou performed until the light show began at 9:30pm. At the conclusion of the 20-minute fireworks display, Chris & Lou performed for another hour as guests made their way across the beach to their cars – or simply relaxed on the newly spacious lakefront.

“The Fireworks on the Lakefront event is the result of some impressive teamwork among the Porter County Commissioners; the Towns of Porter, Chesterton, and Burns Harbor; the Duneland School Corporation; Indiana Dunes Tourism; the Indiana Dunes State Park; and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore,” said Heather Ennis, the Chamber’s Executive Director. “This celebration wouldn’t be possible without many different community leaders – and generous financial sponsors - pitching in to do their part.”
