First Viking University session to inform parents about VCS history and operations

The VCS Strategic Plan has two community relations’ goals: 1) All VCS constituents will be provided opportunities to be actively engaged in an effort to improve student achievement; and 2) Positive news, challenges, relevant educational public policies, and thorough programming information will be shared with all VCS constituents. As a specific action step in addressing these goals, we are starting a new concept this month called Viking University. Viking University is a series of monthly one hour sessions in which VCS parents are invited to attend to learn more about our school system.

The first Viking University is this Wednesday, January 12 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Thomas Jefferson Middle School Auditorium. The session will feature TJMS Principal Paul Knauff giving a brief history of our school system. Board President Jim Sarkisian and Vice- President Brigid McLinn will give parents an idea of the role a board plays in the operation of a school system, and the central office executive team will provide parents with insight on each team member’s responsibilities in leading and managing VCS.

Each Viking University session will be designed to provide parents with information and an opportunity to ask presenters questions. Our goal is not only to inform, but also to develop parent ambassadors for our school corporation who will be able to share what they have learned through Viking University with other parents and community members.

Parents interested in attending this Wednesday may enter TJMS through Entrance 5 (in back of building near the baseball diamonds) or Entrance 6 (located on the side of the building between TJE and TJMS). Once in the building, signs will be posted directing parents to the auditorium.

Please note the dates, locations, and topics of future Viking University sessions listed in this newsletter.

We believe Viking University is a valuable opportunity for parents to learn about VCS and to increase parent engagement and support as we strive to help every student reach their potential!
