FirstLight HomeCare of Valparaiso Makes Helping People a Priority

As you are well aware, FirstLight HomeCare of Valparaiso is awesome. They help tons of people in the region everyday; the elderly, those with disabilities, and those who are recovering from injuries. Owners Michelle and Jim Alex recently traveled to Washington D.C. to receive a Franchisee of the Year Award from the International Franchise Association. They, along with other franchise owners from different industries received an award and recognition for their hard work and dedication to their trade.

While in D.C., Michelle and Jim took it upon themselves to head to the Hill and do some lobbying. There has been discussions recently about changing FirstLight from franchise to a corporate-owned chain.

"One of the things that makes FirstLight successful is that we are locally owned," Michelle said. "Many of our caregivers come to work for us for that very reason."

There are many reasons why franchising is beneficial. Corporations sell franchises so that they can expand. When someone buys a franchise, they take on the financial burden and royalties. The corporation benefits there, and the franchise owner benefits by getting marketing power, the brand name, and the proven business model that has already been created by the corporation.

On top of this, franchise owners are often local citizens. They know their communities and the needs within them.

"We have a time-tested business plan so we know that what we do works," Michelle said. "But we are able to keep some originality to our business."
