Fitness Programs Perfect for Resolutions

Fitness-ProgramsAs the calendar turns over to January every year, people set goals for improving themselves in a variety of ways.

Many of the most common objectives people have are related to wellness. Porter County Parks and Recreation is offering several programs in 2013 that are geared toward improving personal health.

Snowshoe/Hike at the Park
Saturdays, Jan.-Feb. | 10-11 a.m. | Sunset Hill Farm | $5
Enjoy the health benefits of this low-impact aerobic exercise at Sunset Hill Farm County Park with experienced instructors. If the weather does not allow for snowshoeing, participants will Nordic walk instead. Equipment is provided. You can also schedule a private group snowshoe hike at Sunset Hill Farm by contacting Wellness Coordinator Becky Kreiger at 219-734-0203 or bkreiger@porterco.org.

Senior Snowshoeing/Hike
Wed., Jan. 16, 23, 30 | 3 p.m. | Sunset Hill Farm | $5
Depending on the weather, seniors can enjoy snowshoeing or hiking the trails at Sunset Hill Farm.

Full Moon Frenzy
Weds., Jan. 23 | 6:30-7:30 p.m. | Sunset Hill Farm | $5
Snowshoe or hike under the glow of a full moon with park staff. Hot chocolate will follow in the program center. Equipment will be provided.

Center Your Energy
Sun., Jan. 27 | 10 a.m.-Noon | Brincka Cross Gardens | $20
Learn breathing and meditation techniques to help center yourself under the guidance of an experienced instructor at Brincka Cross Gardens.

Raising a Little Health - Mileage Club
Wednesdays, Jan. 30-May 15 | 6 p.m. | Sunset Hill Farm |$50
The goal of this 16-week program is to get participants to regularly walking every day. Each participant will set a goal for the number of miles they hope to log during the program (somewhere between 200 and 500 for most people). The program will offer support, journaling, education and endurance training. Participants must be moderately active and at least 18 years old.

Year Round Run Club
Every Tues. and Thurs. | 8-9 a.m. | Sunset Hill Farm | Free
Led by an experienced trail runner, you will discover the many routes Sunset Hill Farm has to offer. This program is free and open to the public. Meet in the main parking lot. Runs generally cover about five miles.

Women's Walk Club
Every Tues. and Thurs. beginning Jan. 29 8-9 a.m. | Sunset Hill Farm | Free
Take a fitness walk through the trails at beautiful Sunset Hill Farm.
