Food Bank NWI and NIPSCO Provide Food, Hope for the Holidays

rot2The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana will hold two holiday food distributions to provide additional food assistance to families in need during December. The 5th Annual Hope for the Holidays distributions are sponsored by NIPSCO, and will be held on Saturday, December 10 (9am-12pm) at St. Mary Hildebrandt Hall in Griffith, and Saturday, December 17 (9am-12pm) at Christ Lutheran Church in Valparaiso.

“Individuals and families struggle with hunger year-round, but the pressure of the holiday season can make it even more difficult for families trying to make ends meet.” said Steve Beekman, interim executive director of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. “These annual distributions help provide additional, critical food assistance to many people in need across Northwest Indiana, and at a time when they might need it most.”

In addition to providing nutritious meals to people in need this season, the Hope for the Holidays campaign aims to activate the community around hunger in Northwest Indiana. More than 150 community and corporate volunteers will donate their time to help hand out meals to those receiving assistance. The food distribution was made possible by a $10,000 sponsorship from NIPSCO.

"From employee volunteerism to charitable giving, NIPSCO is proud of the longtime partnership with the Food Bank of Northwest indiana in support of the fight against hunger," added Violet Sistovaris, Executive Vice President & President NIPSCO.

Items to be handed out will include proteins, grains, produce, and other nonperishable meals. The two distributions will begin at 9:00am and individuals will receive assistance on a first come, first served basis. Residents of Lake and Porter counties need to bring proof of residency, and are encouraged to bring their own bags and boxes to carry their items.
