Hying, center, bishop of the Gary Catholic Diocese, anoints with oil the hands of Sister Marlene Shapley, Franciscan Alliance Northern Indiana vice president of mission services, during an annual Mass celebrating the Feast Day of St. Luke, patron saint of physicians, that was said at the Corpus Christi Chapel at Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Crown Point on Oct. 19.

The bishop presided over the program, which honored hospital physicians living and deceased, as well as “every person who serves with Franciscan Alliance and Franciscan St. Anthony Health in the name of Christ.” The anointing of hands is meant to remind participants of God’s gifts and to help bring healing people to people. The names of the hospital’s 52 late physicians also were read as a tribute. During a tribute to the work of health care providers, Hying also related the story of his mother, who was a registered nurse at a company in Wisconsin, and how she met his father, who was sent to her after injuring his foot on the job. “I often say that I’m here, thanks to that,” he joked. Shown to the bishop’s right is the Rev. Anthony Janik, hospital director of spiritual services, who was concelebrant of the Mass. In the background is Deacon William Sayre.
