Drill-Teaches-Nursing-and-EMS-Students-a-Lifelike-Lesson-01Rescuers work to remove a victim, portrayed by a University of St. Francis – Crown Point nursing student, from a mangled pick-up truck after cutting off its roof, during a second annual accident simulation drill conducted by the university, the Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Crown Point Emergency Medical Services Academy and area emergency services personnel on the St. Francis campus Oct. 10. Some 20 trainees in the academy’s emergency medical technician and paramedic program participated, along with nearly 30 medical-surgical nursing students, all of whom got a taste of a lifelike situation, as they treated victims from four vehicles and a pedestrian.

The students also acted as victims and transporters. The injured were assessed outside, before being taken to a simulated emergency room inside the university for treatment, transported by ambulance to the hospital, or flown by a helicopter, provided by Superior Ambulance, to a trauma center. Instructors and trainers monitored the students’ performances and discussed the results during an evaluation session later. Participating first-responders were from Crown Point Fire and Rescue, Lakeshore Emergency Medical Services and Lakes of the Four Seasons, Boone Grove, Tri-Creek and Newton County emergency medical services.
