FREE ART EVENT FOR WOMEN VETERANS AT SOUTH SHORE ARTS

In partnership with Teena’s Legacy, South Shore Arts invites women Veterans, as well as the wives, mothers, and daughters of Veterans to learn how to “Reupholster with a Purpose.” Owner of Teena’s Legacy and artist Jamika Smith believes in the power of women learning, sharing, and working together, and this afternoon event aims to boost self-esteem, sharpen imagination, and enhance the creative mind via learning a real-world skill.

Register today for this upcoming FREE event that will take place on September 3, at South Shore Arts Hammond location Substation No. 9, at 435 Fayette Street, from 12-4pm. This program is designed to be a skilled-training event at a leisurely pace for women, where they will learn how to personalize, paint, and re-upholster a chair within a supportive and creative circle. All supplies will be provided, including the vintage chairs for repurposing. A box lunch will be enjoyed while sharing stories that will guide and impact their chair design. Each participant will leave with their own signature piece and a creative connection to others within the Veteran community. All supplies and socially distanced refreshments are included.

The program will include demonstrations and step-by-step instruction by Jamika Smith, and assisted by Director of Education, Natalie Heath. Artists will learn the basic skills of upholstery and in doing so, will create a truly personalized ‘statement piece’ of furniture that represents their journey and spirit. Artists will have a variety of leather, fabric, and decorative materials to choose from such as acrylic paint, an airbrushing station, and a large variety of 3D embellishments.
