Gary Mayor Greets Carolers at City Hall then Learns of Connecticut School Tragedy

Gary-Carolers-City-Hall-2012Earlier today, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson welcomed students from the Ambassador Academy of Gary to sing Christmas carols at City Hall. More than 50 youngsters assembled on the center staircase and performed a list of familiar holiday tunes to an audience of City employees. The students were also joined by their principal, Dr. Vercena Stewart and several teachers.

We were honored to sing at City Hall,” said Stewart. “This was our first time, and we are looking forward to coming back next year.

The children sounded simply beautiful,” said Freeman-Wilson. “What a great way to start out our Friday.

Soonafter, the Mayor learned of the school shooting that had taken place in Newtown, CT and shared the following sentiments.

My heart is now saddened after hearing of the massacre that has taken place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. My prayers and thoughts go out to the families, the school staff and the entire town. It’s ironic that City Hall was just filled with children who are similar in age to the victims. As a parent, I know this is beyond devastating. May God give them strength to get through this unspeakable tragedy.”
