Giving Back That Is What It Is All About

TJMS-02-06-15Children are often some of our best examples. At Thomas Jefferson Elementary the students are big into giving to others. In fact as you walk up the path to TJE before you enter you will encounter a sign that simply reads “We’re a school that cares”. The sign just isn’t a sign it has true meaning. The students, staff, and parents take giving back to others to the next level.

Throughout the year many efforts are made by TJE to give back to the Valparaiso Community. Giving is a life lesson that not only benefits those that receive but ultimately those that give. It is important that all in Valparaiso know that elementary children from ages 5-11 are constantly thinking of ways to give. From raising money to help build Valplayso, to singing Christmas Carols at local nursing homes, collecting food to donate to local food pantries, collecting supplies to give to our troops, to raising money to donate to worthy causes such as blood cancers and heart disease our kids stop at nothing. The students are even going as far as writing persuasive letters to give to other causes. Just today I received a letter from a few fourth grade students in hopes to start fundraising for local animal shelters.

In a time where academics is often looked upon as the ultimate success of a school one huge area that is often overlooked are the life lessons that are being cultivated and learned. Giving is not a state standard nor will it ever be a question on ISTEP. But I contend it may be one of the most important lessons a child can learn. Giving to others makes the world a better place and the children at TJE definitely understand that giving back is what it is all about. We at TJE challenge anyone that has just read this article to show an act of kindness to someone today. We guarantee you will feel better about yourself after you do so.
